News Sources Living in Silos

I posted the following this morning on my NewsNosh blog. I think it’s relevant here as well:

Online news has never been more exciting. Sources of news — business news among them — are popping up everywhere.

The activity is frenetic.

  • Technorati, which tracks the blogosphere, recently reported that it is following more than 57 million blogs. That’s a lot of blogs!
  • Robert Scoble posted one of his great video interviews last night with the CEO of Pluggd, a new audio search engine for podcasts that lets you seek clips within a podcast.
  • Topix.net, the online news site, announced another $15 million in financing to “fund development and marketing of new online consumer news services.”

And, hey, it’s only Tuesday.

With all this swirl, one important fact I’ve noticed is this: Online news still seems to be stuck in silos: blogs, podcasts, news sites. Just wait! News is news and I want to be able to find it all.

That’s why we created NewsNosh.

Don’t get me wrong. I absolutely love all these developments. The news and information industry has never been more exciting. It’s just important to realize that all these news formats work together.

I enjoy reading blogs, but also listening to podcasts. News sites are critical — where, after all, do these 57 million blogs get their information anyway? With a feedreader and a good way to find new sources, the information available today is nothing short or revolutionary.

So, let’s make sure we don’t get so stuck in silos that we miss the big picture!
