Clearly, we are in the middle of a public relations bull market. PR services are in great demand. And with this, the job market has become quite active.
My podcast, Talking Communications with Farrell Kramer, takes on this issue in Episode 12 -- The Job Market. Bill Heyman, President and CEO of Heyman Associates, is my guest and our discussion is focused on the strength of the PR job market and the broad trends that are driving it.
One fascinating point that comes up is this: While communications departments and agencies alike are generating a great deal of hiring activity, senior managers remain shy about making "out-of-the-box" hires. Bill talks about this in some detail and describes just why it is happening.
Anyone in the job market or looking to make a key hire should find Bill's insights tremendously valuable.

Perhaps it is a bull market,
Perhaps it is a bull market, but the headhunters seem to want to continue living in 2002, behaving as if they don't need to work with their candidates. I would like to hear Bill address the question of why these recruiters aren't getting it. I have been witness (and a participant twice) to at least half a dozen times when, despite the dearth of real PR talent, recruiters failed to use one of their candidates in a search. In 3 of those situations, the candidate finally gave up on the recruiter, put in a resume directly and got the job!
I agree with FK. It's bad enough that employers are trying to hire according to a list of boxes to check off, but I would hope that recruiters would understand enough to council their clients to consider candidates with the abilities and personality that are applicable to the particular position. In at least half of these situations, the client is unhappy with the candidate and lets them go. Most of us are so fed up, we're getting out of the business.
